The tally of fatalities due to the transport jet that caught fire and plummeted has now reached 13, as confirmed by recent announcements.
City Leader's Announcement
“On my way to the Workers’ vigil, I received word of a thirteenth victim that lost their life as a consequence of the UPS flight 2976 accident,” expressed the city mayor in a social media post. “My thoughts are with the relatives, friends and colleagues of all who were lost in this recent disaster. We will get through this as one.”
Casualties Named
A release from the company named the pilots operating the aircraft as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our sympathies go out to all UPSer who has been touched and everyone in our Louisville region – supporting you and guaranteeing you get the attention and resources you need is our focus,” the company’s statement read.
Probe Details
Federal authorities revealed that the freight aircraft’s left wing ignited and an engine fell off soon after liftoff from the aviation hub, resulting in the jet to fall and explode into a fireball.
The National Transportation Safety Board has said it is examining the plane’s service record, that was in Texas for maintenance weeks ahead of the crash.
Aviation data indicated the plane was on the runway in the Texas city from the start of last month to mid-October.
“We are aware that this aircraft was there in the facility,” said an investigator on Thursday, without a precise time frame. “We will examine every piece of maintenance that was performed, from the Texas period, straight to the date of the flight.”
Findings of Critical Evidence
The pilot’s recorder and data recorder were recovered, and the power plant was located on the runway.
The recorders – referred to as black boxes – were built to survive accident forces and intense fire from infernos, and they appeared to be undamaged when located among the remains. Investigators will reviewing information from the recorders.
Aircraft’s concluding recorded information showed an elevation of 475 ft and a rate of that speed prior to the crash.
Maintenance History
Based on FAA records dated that date, a fissure on a structural piece inside the center wing fuel tank demanded maintenance.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which indicated it supplies structural repairs for the company’s jet and runs a maintenance center in San Antonio, declined to comment, but expressed it would cooperate fully when relevant authorities reached out it.
Operations Resume
Meanwhile, UPS Worldport activities restarted last night with its overnight also known as nighttime procedure, official Jim Mayer stated. All three tarmacs at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were additionally reopened.
The sorting center in the city is the firm’s biggest. The facility hires over 20,000 workers in the region, manages three hundred trips each day and organizes over a huge volume of parcels an hour.
Local Reaction
A candlelight vigil was conducted on the night of 6 November by the local worker’s group, which supports employees at the aviation hub, the organization’s biggest freight center.
Teamsters Local 89, which supports UPS workers, started the gathering with a period of reflection at that time, the estimated moment of the accident before.
“This event was so abrupt, so surprising,” the mayor addressed the group of attendees. “No one had a chance to part to any of those who we have said farewell to.”
