The Three Lions to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground
The English squad will commence their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they achieve the anticipated passage for a championship taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
City’s stadium has not welcomed an Three Lions game since eight years ago, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to host the national team for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win Group B, their last-16 tie would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean commencing the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Opening and Demonstration
The tournament was inaugurated at an event in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were confronted as they approached the site by around fifty activists, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were displayed with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will involve the Welsh team if they qualify.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be used for European club finals from the following campaign, will attract households and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.
Participating Countries
The Ireland are due to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the standard process.
Venues and Playoffs
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground complete the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches held at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be held in Belfast, which was excluded as a host city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.
