The Siblings from the Dagestani Region Excelling in MMA and at Man Utd.

Ibragim Ibragimov smiles as he thinks about how his family's life has evolved since relocating to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I adore it here," the Professional Fighters League competitor declares.

"My father and I always say, 'this was the nation I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man left his homeland in the Caucasus region of Russia as his father was convinced a move covering more than 3,000 miles promised better career prospects for him and his siblings.

The original plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish their education before joining one of the country's universities.

However, life now looks slightly different for the Ibragimov household.

Ibragim is now a professional MMA fighter and is viewed as one of the prime prospects in the PFL, a major MMA league.

His brothers have taken a separate route in athletics and have all been signed by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a place in the first team.

"The primary goal for us is to extract the maximum from our sports," explains Ibragim.

"I hope them to represent all of the finest teams in the world. Now it is Man United, tomorrow it could be a different team."

Starting as Wrestlers to Soccer Prodigies

Situated in southern Russia, Dagestan holds a mystical status among fight enthusiasts for generating a host of UFC titleholders in recent years.

The region has a long tradition in grappling, thriving in the combat sambo discipline and producing numerous Olympic and world champions.

This achievement is not a coincidence, though, as children from the region are frequently encouraged to begin combat sports, particularly wrestling, almost as soon as they can walk.

"When I was young, my dad was constantly instructing me and my younger brothers that we needed to be strong, firstly to defend yourself, your family, and your friends," says Ibragim.

"So we all got used to fighting, and which is why everyone understands how to fight in Dagestan. It's not a surprise."

"Amir was a highly skilled wrestler. You can see the move from wrestling to football; obviously, it helped my little brothers a great deal."

"Some of the footballers he faces lack the identical foundation he has. That's why he's solid, powerful and really competitive – due to wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, coaches grouped him with boys significantly older.

He was not intimidated by the mistake and was more than comfortable competing against older players because of his experience in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the same age, so the story goes," remarks Ibragim.

Amir was signed, along with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's stay in South Yorkshire was brief, though, as only weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's talent and he transferred across the Pennines as a result.

"They faced Manchester United in a tournament and Amir scored a spectacular free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their talent spotters saw him play and selected him straight away."

Six years after signing for the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's history to practice with the senior side when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Know what he told me? 'This is where I belong'," Ibragim reveals.

"Can he be a first-team player for Manchester United? Absolutely. They should let all the young players play now."

"In my opinion they would play worse than the current first-team players. I believe the young guys are more motivated than the current first-team players."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have also made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this youngster is gifted," adds Ibragim.

"He picked up everything faster than everyone else. He's a good defender. He's going to be similar to a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Goal' to Compete at the Theatre of Dreams

Ibragim has now moved to Manchester and spends most of his days sharpening his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he spent three weeks in his native region at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev prepare for a November UFC championship bout.

"I never have imagined I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim admits.

"He was the greatest fighter in the world – and we constantly used to look up to him when we were young."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and sparring alongside Islam Makhachev."

Fresh from working with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim states he is desperate to claim a world title of his own one day.

However that does not stop him from sometimes dreaming of representing United and walking out on the historic turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I owned a PlayStation at home and I always used to play as Man United, scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez," he says.

"Now, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's similar to a dream come true."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a goal for me. I was speaking to the PFL guys about it to see if they could do it. It would be massive."
