The original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company

This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

Both founders have asserted how the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol of Support

Mr. Cohen revealed via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions for the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which match those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Historical Activism and Recent Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to develop other ice cream flavors that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.

This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was undermined after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
