The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
