Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
