The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
