Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
