Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A new initialism came to light several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to doctors including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that atrocities are continuing. Officials disputes these accusations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is accused of. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A contest that initially championed togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
