England's Assistant Coach Shares His Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
Ten years back, Anthony Barry was playing in League Two. Today, he is focused on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His path from athlete to trainer started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his purpose.
Staggering Ascent
The coach's journey is incredible. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he built a standing with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs included top European clubs, while also serving in international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it.
“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a systematic approach enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their methods feature psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and dislikes phrases such as "break".
“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Driven Leaders
The assistant coach says and the head coach as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he declares. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus long hours toward. It’s our job not only to stay ahead with developments but to surpass them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly during that time. It’s to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”
Upcoming Matches
He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; instead. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play ought to embody everything that is good about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.
“For it to feel easy, we need to provide an approach that enables them to move and run like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and more in doing.
“There are morale boosts for managers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, closing down early. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data currently. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”
Passion for Progress
The coach's thirst for development is relentless. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class included stars like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered difficult settings he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, and he trained detainees in a football drill.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – was published. Frank was one of those impressed and he recruited the coach to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.
His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, and, four months later, they secured European glory. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he brought Barry over from Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
