A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
