Arteta Praises ‘More Reliable’ Squad and Acknowledges Kai Havertz Setback.
The Gunners' boss has expressed confidence that his team can continue to cope with player absences after confirming that attacker Kai Havertz is not ready for a few more weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for Havertz
Havertz has been sidelined since August due to an operation on his knee. Hoped to be available at the start of this month, Arteta revealed the player faced a hurdle when increasing his rehabilitation and failed to reach “to the next level.”
“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a group that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” Arteta said.
Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash
This development leaves a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between sticking with Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus remains an option after 11 months out.
Defensive Concerns Linger
Further fitness issues affect defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Chelsea match. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.
The manager is convinced the substantial investment on new players during the summer has resulted in a much stronger position to navigate such setbacks.
Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit
Questioned if increased squad depth was benefiting their championship push, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, because this season has been worse in the attacking line, and now the situation with the backline,” he added.
“We learned from the past that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at this level. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”
Arteta's Support for Suffering Star
Commenting on the complication previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “He followed all protocols. He could not go to the next level and now it’s looking like we have unlocked that.”
Arteta expressed his keenness to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Truly, he is a footballer who, in my view, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his character, his attitude. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”
“His fitness history is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I can’t wait to get him back involved and playing because I feel it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
